"There are traditional rights of passage that come with being a mom. First smiles, first steps, the first day of school. There are confirmations, proms, graduations. Most moms are prepared that their child will one day move away, either heading off to college in another state or even moving across the country for work. But military moms are not most moms. Now five years into the War in Iraq, it appears our attention to our own military families has waned. In a 24-hour news cycle consumed mostly with political coverage in an election year, we're wise to remember that there are still friends, neighbors and strangers that have sons or daughters deployed in far-off and usually dangerous countries. If it's hard for them to sleep at night, if a ringing phone always makes their heart jump, if they avoid watching the news in fear of what they might see, at least we can say that we are here for them. We can tell them that we have not forgotten what they live with every day and how they inspire us with their strength. We can honor them and let them tell their stories..."
